GRADARA
Gradara is a very famous little town thanks to its impressive beauty and its literal link with the episode of Paolo and Francesca, sung by Dante in V Canto -Inferno -Quando leggemmo il desiato riso/essere baciato da cotanto amante/questi che mai da me non fia diviso/la bocca mi baciò tutto tremante- These four verses taken from the Divina Commedia, permit Gradara to be regarded as the 'lovers town'. Undoubtedly, Dante contemplates the sin of love between Paolo and Francesca through such a pitiful and human eye that, for centuries, their story has represented the height of amorous literature.

A lot of tourists visit the castle and silently come to see the room where Paolo and Francesca declared their love to each other, and the trap-door through which they tried to escape from her husband's revenge (Gianciotto Malatesta). The fortress is square with turrets on its corners and with an imposing polygonal keep on its North-East side. It was built in the 13th century and restored in 1923. It contains the armoury and the torture hall. Even if the fortress is very interesting, we could not forget the charming village (very well-preserved), that is surrounded by impressive 14th century boundary walls. On these walls a wide gate provides the entrance to the Town Hall.
